W&D next week

W&D is taking a week out of Melbourne next week, to escape the glamour of the Melbourne Cup horse racing carnival.  So W&D will resume, auspiciously, on Friday 13th November.

[1]  Amelia Earhart was an American aviation pioneer and author.  She was the first female to fly across the Atlantic and set many other flying records.  In 1937, whilst trying the first flying circumnavigation of the globe, her plane disappeared over the central Pacific, near Howland Island.  The plane has never been found. 

[2]  Said in the famous Profumo scandal, which helped bring the downfall of the UK government of Harold McMillan.  While giving evidence at the trial of Stephen Ward, charged with living off the immoral earnings of Christine Keeler and Rice-Davies, the latter made the famous riposte. When James Burge, the defence counsel, pointed out that Lord Astor denied an affair or having even met her, she replied, "Well (giggle) he would, wouldn’t he?"
